Can You Mix CBD Oil With Vape Juice? What’s Safe to Vape

Thinking of adding CBD oil drops to your vape juice? Don’t. Here’s why oral CBD oil isn’t safe to vape — and the safe ways to vape CBD instead.

The short version

Can you put CBD oil in a vape?

No. CBD oil drops are made to be swallowed and contain carrier oils such as MCT that don’t mix with vape juice and aren’t safe to inhale. Vaping oil has been linked to lung inflammation.

To vape CBD safely, use a ready-made CBD e-liquid, a pre-filled CBD vape pen, or a PG/VG-based CBD additive made specifically for vaping — and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Mix CBD oil with vape juice – CBD vape juice bottle and vape device

This guide to mix CBD oil with vape juice covers what you need to know, using UK guidance and the latest evidence. It’s one of the most common questions we get: can you add your CBD oil drops to vape juice and vape them? The short answer is no. Ordinary CBD oil is made to be swallowed, not inhaled, and vaping it can harm your lungs. This guide explains why, and the safe ways to vape CBD instead.

Can I use CBD oil in my vape pen?

No. CBD oil drops (tinctures) contain CBD dissolved in a carrier oil — usually MCT (coconut-derived) oil or hemp seed oil. These oils are fine to swallow but aren’t designed to be heated and inhaled.

  • Oil doesn’t mix with vape juice. E-liquids are made from propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). Oil separates from them, so you can’t get an even mix.
  • Inhaling oil can damage your lungs. Breathing in oil droplets has been linked to lipoid pneumonia, a type of lung inflammation.
  • It can damage your device. Thick oils clog wicks and coils, causing burnt, harsh hits.
Never vape CBD oil drops

If a product is labelled as an oral oil, tincture or “drops”, don’t put it in a vape. If you’ve vaped CBD oil and develop a cough, chest pain or shortness of breath, stop and seek medical advice.

The safe ways to vape CBD

1. Use a ready-made CBD e-liquid

The simplest option is CBD vape juice (CBD e-liquid). It’s formulated with PG and VG specifically for vaping, so it mixes evenly and vaporises properly. Choose the strength on the bottle and use it in a refillable vape.

2. Use a pre-filled CBD vape

A pre-filled CBD vape pen needs no mixing, filling or settings at all — ideal if you’re new to vaping CBD.

3. Use a CBD additive made for vaping

Some brands sell CBD “additives” or “boosters” designed to be mixed into an unflavoured or flavoured e-liquid. These are PG/VG-based, not oil-based. If you use one:

  • Check the label says it’s made for vaping and lists only PG, VG, CBD and flavouring.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s mixing ratio exactly.
  • Mix in a clean bottle, shake well, and label it with the total CBD and date.
  • Don’t add anything else, and never use additives containing vitamin E acetate.

Working out the strength of CBD vape juice

To find the CBD per ml, divide the total CBD by the bottle size. For example, 1000mg in a 10ml bottle is 100mg per ml. How much you take in depends on how much you vape, which is harder to measure than drops — so start with a few puffs and see how it suits you.

The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day across all products. Our CBD dosage calculator can help you estimate CBD per puff, and our guide to how much CBD to add to vape juice covers strengths in more detail.

Storing CBD vape juice

  • Keep bottles tightly closed, somewhere cool and dark.
  • Store out of reach of children and pets.
  • Shake before use if the liquid has settled.
  • Don’t use it if the colour, smell or texture changes noticeably, or after the best-before date.

Key takeaways

  1. Never vape CBD oil drops or tinctures.

  3. Use CBD e-liquid, a pre-filled CBD vape, or a vape-specific CBD additive instead.

Mixing CBD and vape juice — frequently asked

No. CBD oil drops use carrier oils that don’t blend with PG/VG vape juice and aren’t safe to inhale. Use a CBD e-liquid or a CBD additive made for vaping instead.

The oil can clog and burn your coil, and inhaling oil droplets has been linked to lipoid pneumonia. If you develop a cough, chest pain or breathlessness after vaping oil, stop and seek medical advice.

Only with an additive made specifically for vaping, following the manufacturer’s ratio. Most people find a ready-made CBD e-liquid simpler and more consistent.

Check the label: it should say it’s for vaping and list PG and/or VG as the base. Products labelled as oils, tinctures or drops are for taking by mouth.

It depends on the strength and how much you vape, so it’s hard to measure precisely. Start with a few puffs, and keep your total within the FSA’s 10mg-a-day guidance.
