Vape Tricks for Beginners: O-Rings, Ghosts, French Inhales and More

Vape Tricks for Beginners: O-Rings, Ghosts, French Inhales and More
How to do six classic vape tricks, step by step, which devices and liquids make them easier, and the safety and etiquette rules every adult vaper should follow.
The short version
Most tricks need thick vapour, so a direct-to-lung, sub-ohm device with a high-VG, low-nicotine liquid works best. Start with the ghost and the French inhale, then move on to O-rings.
Take breaks, stop if you feel dizzy, avoid high-nicotine liquids for long sessions, and never vape near children or where it isn’t allowed.

Vape tricks are a hobby for some adult vapers. This guide covers the basics. It isn’t encouragement to start vaping: if you don’t smoke, the NHS advises you not to vape.
What you need
| Best for tricks | |
|---|---|
| Device | A direct-to-lung (DTL), sub-ohm kit with open airflow |
| Liquid | High VG (70% or more) for thick vapour |
| Nicotine | Low or zero. Big DTL hits with strong nicotine can make you dizzy |
| Setting | Still air indoors where vaping is allowed. Tricks fall apart in wind |
Small MTL pens and CBD pens don’t produce enough vapour for most tricks. Don’t use CBD products for cloud chasing, which means taking much more than you need. See MTL vs DTL.
6 beginner tricks
1. The ghost (ghost inhale)
- Draw a mouthful of vapour without inhaling.
- Open your mouth wide and gently push out a ball of vapour.
- Quickly suck it back in.
Full guide: how to ghost vape.
2. The French inhale
- Hold vapour in your mouth.
- Open your mouth slightly and let the vapour roll out.
- Breathe in gently through your nose so it flows up from your lips.
3. O-rings
- Take a mouthful of thick vapour and let it settle at the back of your throat.
- Shape your lips into an “O”, with your tongue pulled back.
- Push out short pulses of air from your throat, like a gentle cough without sound.
4. The dragon
Hold vapour in, then push it out of both corners of your mouth and your nose at the same time.
5. The waterfall
Blow vapour into a bottle, then pour it out slowly like liquid.
6. The bull ring
Blow a small O-ring and quickly inhale it back through your nose.
Common problems
- Thin vapour: use a higher-VG liquid and more airflow.
- Messy rings: slow down, and push from your throat, not your lungs.
- Coughing: take smaller draws. See how to vape without coughing.
- Burnt taste: you’re chain-vaping. See why does my vape taste burnt?
Safety and etiquette
- Stop if you feel dizzy, light-headed or sick.
- Use low- or zero-nicotine liquid for practice sessions.
- Stay hydrated, since high-VG vapour dries the mouth.
- Never vape around children or pets, or where it isn’t permitted.
- Don’t share devices.
- Use a quality device and battery, and never charge unattended.
Vaping isn’t risk-free. If you don’t smoke, the NHS advises you not to start. Vapes are for adults aged 18 and over. Never vape CBD oil drops or any oil-based product.

Vape tricks: FAQs
The ghost inhale or French inhale. Both are easy to learn and build the control you need for O-rings.
A direct-to-lung, sub-ohm kit with open airflow and a high-VG, low-nicotine e-liquid produces the thick vapour most tricks need.
You’re probably pushing from your lungs or moving too fast. Use thick vapour, keep your tongue back and push short, gentle pulses from your throat.
You’re probably taking in too much nicotine. Use low- or zero-nicotine liquid, take breaks, and stop if you feel unwell.
CBD pens don’t produce enough vapour for most tricks, and cloud chasing would mean taking far more CBD than recommended.
