What Strength CBD Should I Use? mg, % and Drops Explained
How to read CBD strength labels (total mg, percentage and mg per drop), what low, medium and high strength really mean, and how to pick one that fits the FSA’s 10mg daily guidance.
The short version
The big number on a CBD oil (500mg, 1000mg) is the total in the bottle, not what you take. What matters is mg per drop: in a 10ml bottle, 1000mg (10%) is about 5mg per drop at 20 drops per ml.
The FSA advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg of CBD a day. A lower-strength oil makes that easier to measure. Higher strength doesn’t mean “better”, it just means fewer drops.

“What strength CBD should I use?” is one of the most common questions we get. Labels are confusing: one brand says 1000mg, another says 10%, another says “high strength”. They can all describe the same thing. Here’s how to translate them and choose sensibly.
Three ways strength is shown
- Total mg: how much CBD is in the whole bottle, for example 1000mg.
- Percentage: CBD as a share of the liquid. For oils, 1% ≈ 10mg per ml, so 10% ≈ 100mg/ml.
- mg per drop or serving: the number that actually tells you how much you take.
CBD oil strength chart (10ml bottle)
Assuming about 20 drops per ml, which varies a little with the dropper and oil:
| Bottle label | % | mg per ml | mg per drop | Drops for 10mg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250mg | 2.5% | 25mg | ~1.25mg | 8 |
| 500mg | 5% | 50mg | ~2.5mg | 4 |
| 1000mg | 10% | 100mg | ~5mg | 2 |
| 2000mg | 20% | 200mg | ~10mg | 1 |
| 3000mg | 30% | 300mg | ~15mg | Less than 1 drop |
In a 30ml bottle, the same total mg is a third of the strength per drop. Always check the bottle size. Use the calculator for your own product:
Assumes about 20 drops per ml. The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day. This tool is for information only and isn’t medical advice.
What do “low”, “medium” and “high” strength mean?
There’s no official definition, but roughly:
| Label | Typical % | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Up to 5% | Beginners. Easy to measure small amounts |
| Medium | 5–10% | Regular users who want fewer drops |
| High | Over 10% | Only useful if you need very few drops. A single drop may exceed 10mg |
Older guides often say you need a stronger oil for “severe symptoms” or a higher body weight. There’s no good evidence for weight-based CBD dosing, and UK CBD products can’t claim to treat pain or any other condition. The FSA advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg of CBD a day, whatever their size.
How to choose your strength
- Start with your daily amount: 10mg or less.
- Pick a strength that makes that easy: 2–4 drops of a 5–10% oil is simple to measure. A 30% oil makes 10mg less than one drop.
- Compare cost per mg: divide the price by the total mg. Higher-strength bottles often cost less per mg but are harder to use precisely.
- Consider the format: gummies have a fixed amount each, and vapes are measured per puff. See gummies vs oil and our CBD vape strength guide.

Safety
CBD can cause drowsiness, diarrhoea and changes in appetite, and it can interact with medicines including blood thinners and anti-epileptic drugs. Speak to a pharmacist first if you take medication, and avoid CBD if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Never vape CBD oil drops. See does CBD get you high? and is CBD legal in England?

Key takeaways
- The total mg on a bottle isn’t your serving. Check mg per drop.
- For oils, 1% ≈ 10mg per ml. At 20 drops per ml, a 10ml 1000mg (10%) oil is about 5mg per drop.
- The FSA advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg of CBD a day.
- Lower-strength oils make small amounts easier to measure accurately.
- Weight-based or “severity”-based dosing isn’t evidence-based.

CBD strength: FAQs
A low to medium strength, around 5%, makes it easy to take small, measurable amounts. In a 10ml bottle, 5% (500mg) is about 2.5mg per drop.
It means there’s 1000mg of CBD in the whole bottle. In a 10ml bottle that’s 10%, or about 5mg per drop.
It depends on strength: about 4 drops of a 5% oil, or 2 drops of a 10% oil, assuming roughly 20 drops per ml.
Not necessarily. Higher strength just means more CBD per drop. It can make it harder to stay within the FSA’s 10mg-a-day guidance.
There’s no good evidence for weight-based CBD dosing. The FSA’s guidance of no more than 10mg a day applies to healthy adults generally.
