How to Choose the Right CBD Gummies: A 7-Point UK Checklist

How to read a CBD gummy label, check that a product is legal and lab tested, compare value per mg and pick a strength that fits the FSA’s guidance.

The short version

The short version

Choose gummies by the numbers on the label: mg of CBD per gummy, extract type, THC content and price per mg. Ignore claims about sleep, pain or anxiety, which UK CBD products aren’t allowed to make.

A legal UK CBD gummy is linked to the FSA’s public list of novel food applications, has a batch-matched independent lab report and contains no more than 1mg of THC per pack.

This guide to how to choose the right CBD gummies covers what you need to know, using UK guidance and the latest evidence. Most CBD gummy packs look alike: bright colours, a big mg number and words like “premium” or “calm”. The useful information is in the small print. This checklist shows you what to look for so you can compare products properly. For an explanation of full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate and vegan options, see the different types of CBD gummies.

1. Find the mg per gummy

A pack labelled “1000mg” could mean 20 gummies of 50mg or 100 gummies of 10mg, which is a huge difference. Look for the CBD per gummy, or divide the total by the number of gummies.

The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg of CBD a day from all sources. Many gummies, including some in our own range, contain 25mg or more each, so check before you buy.

2. Choose the extract that suits you

  • Isolate: pure CBD. The best choice if you’re drug tested or compete in sport.
  • Broad-spectrum: other hemp compounds, with THC removed.
  • Full-spectrum: includes traces of THC, still within the UK limit of 1mg per product.

CBD edibles are classed as novel foods. To be sold legally in England and Wales, a gummy must be linked to an application on the FSA’s public list of CBD products. It also must:

  • contain no more than 1mg of THC (and other controlled cannabinoids) in the whole pack;
  • make no medical claims (“relieves pain”, “treats anxiety”, “cures insomnia”);
  • be labelled with ingredients, allergens, a batch number and a best-before date.

4. Read the lab report

An independent lab report (certificate of analysis) is the only proof of what’s in the gummy. Check that:

  1. the batch number matches your pack;
  2. the CBD content is close to the label claim (within about 10%);
  3. THC is within the legal limit;
  4. it comes from an accredited third-party lab, not the brand itself;
  5. it includes screens for heavy metals, pesticides and microbes.

5. Check the ingredients for your diet

If you…Look for
Are vegan or vegetarianPectin rather than gelatin
Watch your sugarSugar-free options, but polyols can upset your stomach
Have allergiesAllergens listed in bold on the label
Take medicationAvoid added botanicals like ashwagandha or St John’s wort, which can interact with medicines

6. Compare value per mg

Divide the price by the total CBD in the pack. That way you can compare a 300mg pack and a 1000mg pack fairly. A very low price per mg can be a warning sign: independent testing often finds cheap CBD products contain less CBD than they claim.

7. Ignore the health claims

“Sleep”, “relief” and “calm” on a gummy pack are marketing, not evidence. CBD products in the UK can’t legally claim to treat any condition, and the research is still limited. If you’re curious about specific topics, our evidence guides cover sleep, anxiety and stress and pain.

Gummies or something else?

Gummies suit people who want a fixed amount and don’t like the taste of oil. They take 30 minutes to two hours to act. If you want finer control, CBD oil lets you adjust drop by drop. Compare the two in CBD gummies vs CBD oil, and see how long CBD gummies last.

Safety

CBD can cause drowsiness, diarrhoea and changes in appetite, and it can interact with medicines including blood thinners and anti-epileptic drugs. Speak to a pharmacist before using CBD if you take medication, and avoid it if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Store gummies out of children’s reach.

Choosing CBD gummies: FAQs

Look at mg per gummy. The FSA advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg of CBD a day from all sources, and many gummies contain 25mg or more each.

Check that the product is linked to the FSA’s public list of CBD novel food applications, contains no more than 1mg of THC per pack and makes no medical claims.

A batch number matching your pack, CBD content close to the label, THC within the legal limit, and screens for heavy metals, pesticides and microbes from an independent accredited lab.

Not necessarily. Compare price per mg of CBD and check the lab report. Very cheap products are more likely to contain less CBD than stated.

CBD isolate gummies contain no THC. No product is completely risk-free, so keep the batch lab report if you’re tested.
