How Much CBD Should I Vape? A UK Guide to Puffs and Daily Amounts

How to work out the CBD in each puff, how many puffs keep you within the FSA’s 10mg daily guidance, and why weight-based dosing charts don’t hold up.

The short version

The short version

The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg of CBD a day across all products. Many older charts suggest 30–100mg, which is well above that guidance.

For a pen, divide total mg by puff count to get CBD per puff. For e-liquid, track how many ml you use: at 50mg/ml, 0.2ml is 10mg. Start with one or two puffs and wait 10–15 minutes.

Vaping is one of the fastest ways to take CBD. Inhaled CBD reaches the bloodstream within minutes, so it’s also easy to take more than you mean to. The good news is that working out how much you’re vaping is simple once you know two numbers: how much CBD is in the product, and how much of it you use.

How much CBD is it safe to vape a day?

In October 2023 the Food Standards Agency updated its advice: healthy adults should have no more than 10mg of CBD a day, which is about 4–5 drops of a 5% oil. That limit covers all CBD products combined, so if you also take gummies or oil, count those too. The FSA also advises that you shouldn’t take CBD at all if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, unless your doctor says it’s OK.

About weight-based charts: you may see advice like “0.25mg per pound of body weight”, which suggests 37.5mg a day for a 150lb adult. There’s no good evidence behind these formulas, and they recommend several times the FSA’s guidance. We don’t recommend following them.

Step 1: work out the CBD per puff

Pre-filled pen: divide the total CBD by the approximate puff count.

  • 1000mg ÷ 1,500 puffs ≈ 0.67mg per puff, so ~15 puffs makes 10mg
  • 1000mg ÷ 1,000 puffs = 1mg per puff, so 10 puffs makes 10mg

Refillable pen with e-liquid: puff size depends on your device, so track how much liquid you use instead. Divide the bottle’s CBD by its volume to get mg per ml:

E-liquidCBD per mlLiquid for 10mg
1000mg in 10ml100mg/ml0.1ml
3000mg in 60ml50mg/ml0.2ml
3500mg in 100ml35mg/ml~0.29ml
500mg in 10ml50mg/ml0.2ml

Tanks are usually marked in ml, so you can see how much you’ve used over a day. Or use the calculator:

Assumes about 20 drops per ml. The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day. This tool is for information only and isn’t medical advice.

Step 2: start low and go slow

  1. Take one or two gentle puffs of 2–3 seconds each.
  2. Wait 10–15 minutes. Inhaled CBD acts quickly, so give it time before having more.
  3. If you want more, add a puff or two at a time, keeping within your 10mg daily total.
  4. Note what you took and how you felt for the first week or two.

What changes how CBD affects you?

  • Your inhalation: longer or deeper puffs deliver more liquid, and so more CBD, than short ones.
  • Your device: coil, wattage and airflow change how much vapour each puff produces.
  • Product strength: see our CBD vape strength guide for choosing the right mg.
  • Medicines: CBD can interact with some drugs, including blood thinners and anti-epileptic medicines.
  • Other CBD products: gummies, oils and drinks all add to your daily total.

Side effects and when to stop

The WHO describes CBD as generally well tolerated, but it can cause drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, diarrhoea or changes in appetite. Higher amounts taken over time have been linked to effects on the liver. Stop vaping and speak to a pharmacist or GP if you feel unwell, and don’t drive if CBD makes you drowsy.

Only vape liquids made for vaping. Never put CBD oil drops in a vape, because the oil can damage your lungs.

Prefer a fixed amount?

If tracking puffs feels fiddly, CBD gummies or CBD oil give you a set amount per gummy or per drop. Our CBD oil dosage guide covers drops. If you mix your own liquid, see how much CBD to add to vape juice.

  5. Weight-based charts (e.g. 0.25mg per lb) aren’t evidence-based and far exceed FSA guidance.

How much CBD to vape: FAQs

Start with one or two puffs and wait 10–15 minutes. To stay within the FSA’s 10mg daily guidance, divide your pen’s total CBD by its puff count. At 1mg per puff, that’s up to 10 puffs a day.

It depends on the product. Divide the total CBD by the approximate puff count. For example, a 1000mg pen with around 1,500 puffs gives roughly 0.67mg per puff.

Taking more CBD than you need raises the risk of side effects such as drowsiness, upset stomach and, at higher amounts over time, effects on the liver. The FSA advises healthy adults to have no more than 10mg a day.

There’s no good evidence for weight-based CBD formulas, and they usually suggest far more than the FSA’s 10mg-a-day guidance. Start low and track how you feel instead.

Inhaled CBD acts within minutes and generally wears off faster than oils or gummies. Wait 10–15 minutes after each puff or two before deciding whether to have more.
