CBD for Athletes UK: Anti-Doping Rules, Evidence and Safe Use

Is CBD allowed in sport, and could it make you fail a drug test? Here’s the WADA and UKAD position, what the evidence says, and how tested athletes can reduce the risk.

The short version

Can athletes use CBD?

CBD itself has been permitted by WADA since 2018, so it isn’t banned in UK sport. But THC and all other cannabinoids are still prohibited in competition, and many CBD products contain them.

If you’re tested, choose CBD isolate with a batch lab report showing other cannabinoids as “not detected”, follow UKAD’s guidance, and stay within the FSA’s 10mg-a-day limit. There’s no good evidence CBD improves performance.

Athlete running on a track

CBD has become popular in sport — from weekend runners to professional athletes. But if you compete, the big questions aren’t about benefits; they’re about rules. Is CBD allowed? Could it make you fail a drug test? This guide covers the anti-doping position, what the evidence actually says, and how to choose products carefully if you’re tested.

Is CBD allowed in sport?

Yes — CBD itself is permitted. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed cannabidiol from its Prohibited List in 2018. UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) follows the WADA Code, so the same applies to UK sport.

The catch is that all other cannabinoids remain prohibited in competition, including THC. Many CBD products contain other cannabinoids, either by design (full- and broad-spectrum) or through contamination.

UKAD’s advice

UKAD warns that no CBD product can be guaranteed free of prohibited cannabinoids, and athletes are strictly liable for anything found in their sample. If you’re tested, assess the risk carefully, use batch-tested products, and check UKAD’s guidance on supplements before using any CBD.

What does the evidence say about CBD and athletes?

Research into CBD in sport is still at an early stage. A 2020 narrative review in Sports Medicine – Open looked at the evidence and concluded there’s interest in CBD’s potential, but that high-quality studies in athletes are lacking.

In practice, that means:

  • Performance: there’s no evidence that CBD improves strength, speed or endurance.
  • Recovery: small studies on muscle soreness after exercise have produced mixed results — see our guide to CBD for muscle recovery after the gym.
  • Sleep and nerves: some people use CBD as part of an evening routine or before events, but there isn’t enough evidence to say it helps with sleep or anxiety.

We won’t claim CBD treats or prevents anything — the evidence doesn’t support that, and UK rules don’t allow food supplements to make medical claims.

How athletes use CBD

Athletes who choose to use CBD tend to use it in one of these ways:

FormatTypical onsetTypical durationOften used for
CBD gummies45–90 min4–6 hoursA consistent daily routine
CBD oil drops15–45 min3–5 hoursMeasuring small amounts; evening use
CBD vapeA few minutes1–3 hoursQuick onset — not ideal for athletes who rely on lung capacity

How much CBD should athletes take?

Being an athlete doesn’t change the guidance. The Food Standards Agency advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day, from all products combined. You’ll see much higher “athlete doses” online, but they aren’t based on UK guidance.

Use our CBD dosage calculator to see how much CBD is in each drop or gummy of your product.

A checklist for tested athletes

  1. Choose CBD isolate rather than full- or broad-spectrum products.
  2. Check the batch lab report — it should show THC and other cannabinoids as “not detected”, for the exact batch you’re using.
  3. Check your sport’s rules — some governing bodies have extra rules beyond WADA’s.
  4. Read UKAD’s guidance on supplements and use their resources before taking anything new.
  5. Keep records — product, batch number and receipts.

  1. WADA removed CBD from its Prohibited List in 2018.
  2. THC and all other cannabinoids remain prohibited in competition.
  3. No CBD product can be guaranteed free of prohibited cannabinoids.
  4. Tested athletes should use batch-tested CBD isolate and follow UKAD guidance.
  5. There’s no good evidence that CBD improves athletic performance.

CBD for athletes — frequently asked

No. WADA removed CBD from its Prohibited List in 2018. However, THC and all other cannabinoids are still prohibited in competition.

Pure CBD shouldn’t, but many CBD products contain THC or other prohibited cannabinoids, and contamination is possible. Athletes are strictly liable for what’s in their sample.

CBD isolate with a batch-specific lab report showing THC and other cannabinoids as “not detected”. Even then, UKAD says no product can be guaranteed free of prohibited substances.

There’s no evidence that CBD improves strength, speed or endurance. Research on recovery is limited and mixed.

The same as everyone else: the FSA advises healthy adults to take no more than 10mg of CBD a day.
